Getting To Malawi Days 1-4
Day 1-
I had left Fr. Worth at 4pm to Toronto, no immediate problems, but I did have an overnight layover in the lovely Toronto Pearson Airport with 3 suitcases. I slept next to a guy with feet that smelled like brussel sprouts, which oddly reminded of a being in Austin! We do have a brussel sprout fetish going on there and when you work at a county hospital the smell isn't really that unfamiliar.
Day 2-3-
Toronto to Addis Abba. The flight had several Ethiopian locals, sitting to my right as an elderly gentleman who read People and Cosmo in detail during the flight, and to the left of me was a bickering couple. Lets not forget about the 90 year old with dementia, who tired several times to exit the plane while in flight. Lets just say getting stuck that night in Addis Abba was not the worst thing that could have happened. As for the food, the bread that is rolled up like an ace bandage (Injera) is quite interesting, and I'll leave it at that, I learned a lot about Malawi from a Peace Corps worker I was In-Transit with, and was eager to get there! His best words of advice, "Get ready for nothing to make sense".
Day 4-
After my overnight in Addis Abba, and several movies later, I had arrived in Malawi! I was greeted by the wonderful people I would be staying and working with. I made it through customs remarkably, no questions asked. The last think I needed was the leftover suture tray pieces to be taken from me after hoarding them for months! There was a lot to accomplish in one day, I needed a medical license, $315, and a portion of the document notarized $1. Just a few papers needed and I am set to practice! After exchanging some money it was time for some Indian food with my new family and the Peace Corps workers! It was a hot and sticky day, and no running water in our guest house. I guess I'll trade it for some wifi! In bed by 9p and up at 1a, gotta love being jet lagged! More to come from Majete Game Park, a day of tourism before the work begins!
